All counselling sessions are private. This is called confidentiality. There are certain specific exceptions to confidentiality. These are if a client poses a risk to him/herself or another, if a client is suicidal or homicidal and if there is a risk of suicide.

You clinical records may be shared with your consent. For example, this might happen if you want your counsellor to speak with your family doctor on your behalf.

What happens if the counsellor can’t help me?

Contact Elizabeth at 519.471.4540If the counsellor is unable to help you, she/he will make a suitable referral for you.

It does happen from time to time, that the counsellor is unable to offer counselling services to a specific client. This may be because the counsellor is experiencing a similar challenge in her/his own life and it would too difficult to maintain an objective positive in a counselling role (e.g.: separation/divorce). It may be because the counsellor finds certain subject emotionally challenging  (e.g.: challenging adolescent behaviours) and is unable to offer an acceptable level of service.

We need couples counselling but my partner won’t come. What do I do?

Contact Elizabeth at 519.471.4540We need couples counselling but my partner won’t come.

At Oakridge Counselling we understand that it is difficult and can be quite anxiety provoking, even scary, to go to counselling for the first time. It can help a bit if you know what to expect.

At Oakridge Counselling, we always start with a consultation session. This is an opportunity to meet with Elizabeth and to see if you feel comfortable with her and in the setting and to see what happens in counselling. This is a chance to ask questions about counselling before engaging in an ongoing counselling relationship.

Perhaps your partner would be more willing to attend a consultation session before making a commitment to ongoing counselling.

You could also suggest that your partner speak with Elizabeth on the telephone briefly to ask questions or explore concerns about counselling prior to the in office appointment.

If your partner is still reluctant to attend, it is a good idea for you to attend on your own, while making it clear to your partner that you prefer that he/she attend with you.

Do you do direct billing?

Contact Elizabeth at 519.471.4540Do you do direct billing?

Direct billing is when a person has extended health care benefit coverage through their employer, like when you visit the dentist and the service provider eg: the dentist, submits the bills directly to the insurance company. In this case you don’t pay anything at the time of the appointment.

At Oakridge Counselling we don’t do direct billing. If you have extended health care coverage for counselling from your employer, you pay for your session at the time of the session. You are given a paid receipt which you submit to your employer to be reimbursed.

How do I know if my coverage at work covers counselling?

Contact Elizabeth at 519.471.4540How do I know if my coverage at work covers counselling?

Elizabeth Lacey is a “Registered Social Worker” with a “Masters Degree in Social Work.” When you look at your extended health coverage in your benefits package it will list who it covers for counselling. Sometimes it says you have coverage for a psychologist which Elizabeth Lacey is not.

If you have coverage for counselling (or psychotherapy) with “Registered Social Workers” or with “Psychotherapists” then Elizabeth Lacey’s services will be covered. If your benefits cover counselling with “Registered Social Workers” then you will pay your fee when you arrive for your session. Elizabeth will give you a paid invoice, which you submit to your employer for reimbursement.

Is counselling covered by OHIP?

Contact Elizabeth at 519.471.4540Is counselling covered by OHIP?

Generally counselling with a private practice counsellor like Elizabeth Lacey, is not covered by OHIP. There are times when counselling might be covered by OHIP such as when you see a “Registered Social Worker” at your doctors office or at a hospital outpatient or inpatient clinic.

If you see a Psychiatrist or a medical doctor that practices psychotherapy then it will also be covered by OHIP.

Recently in London, Ontario, a number of Family Care Teams have developed. These teams often have “Registered Social Workers” and may have psychologists and/or psychiatrists. It is worth a call to your doctors office to find out if you have access to this type of service.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

Contact Elizabeth at 519.471.4540Do I need a referral from my doctor?

You do not need a referral from your doctor to book a counselling session at Oakridge Counselling. Years ago this was the case, like it was for massage therapy or chiropractic care; however, in the last several years this condition has been removed.

It is important to look at your extended health care coverage closely to see what your coverage is for counselling before you book an appointment.

If you do not have extended health care coverage for counselling you can claim your counselling fees on your income tax as a health expense. You will want to speak with your accountant or the person who completes your tax return about this.
